Serving on the Criminal Justice Act Panel in the District of Alaska

  • Executive Dining Room, James M. Fitzgerald U.S. Courthouse 222 West 7th Avenue Anchorage, AK, 99513 United States (map)

The Alaska Chapter of the Federal Bar Association (FBA) and the Anchorage Association of Women Lawyers (AAWL) will present a lunchtime CLE, entitled "Serving on the Criminal Justice Act Panel in the District of Alaska," on Tuesday, March 6, at noon.  The CLE has been approved for 1 General CLE credit.

Under the Criminal Justice Act (CJA), 18 U.S.C. § 3006A, all persons charged with federal criminal offenses who are financially unable to obtain counsel are entitled to appointment of counsel to represent them.  While the Office of the Federal Public Defender is appointed to represent most these individuals, the remaining eligible defendants are represented by private attorneys.  This CLE will pertain to how private attorneys are selected to serve on the CJA panel in Alaska, how CJA appointments are made, how federal criminal practice differs from state criminal practice, and what resources are available to new CJA panel members.  Our speakers will be CJA panel members John Murtagh, Danée Pontious, and Burke Wonnell, as well as Assistant Federal Defender Jamie McGrady.
